Interactive Data Dashboards with Excel: Advanced Level

Cost: $100 for EASL Members / $175 for General Public

This advanced workshop will take your dashboards to the next level. In this hands-on, step-by-step workshop, Shelly and Tom will provide best practices in dashboard design to make your dashboards really pop. They will also teach you how to incorporate inferential statistics (e.g., t-tests) into your dashboards that update and as you slice- and- dice your data. Throughout the course, you will learn advanced features in Excel to maximize the impact of your dashboards. As part of your participation in this course, you will have access to 6 sample interactive dashboards in Excel that you can use in your own practice. Excel features to maximize the have the chance to learn some "smart" visualizations that your clients will be asking "how'd you do that?". 

You will learn:

  • Best practices in designing your dashboards to maximize impact
  • Four effective dashboard layout techniques
  • Advanced features in Excel to customize your dashboards for various stakeholders
  • How to integrate inferential statistics (e.g., t-tests) into your dashboards

 Prerequisites:

  • Knowledge of both PivotTables and Slicers in Excel is required (Consider taking the beginner workshop on December 4th to get caught up!)

Presenters:

Tom Withee has over 20 years’ experience as an educator, education researcher and adjunct faculty and is currently a senior researcher for Goshen Consulting. At Goshen, he continues to support STEM education through program evaluation and working with agencies to elevate all educators. Tom brings his data analysis and visualization skills as well as deep insight in education to all projects he is involved in. He continues to develop through active involvement in the American Evaluation Association.


Shelly Engelman, Ph.D., is the Director of Research and Evaluation at Custom EduEval LLC in Austin, TX. She earned her PhD in Social Psychology and has over 10 years of research and evaluation experience. Dr. Engelman has been a lead data analyst and behavior science methodologist on over 40 federal and state funded grants and programs. She has a strong knowledge of evaluation and research methodology and theory, as well as an expertise in survey design and advanced statistical modeling techniques (e.g., Structural Equation Modeling, Propensity Score Matching, etc.). Dr. Engelman has led over 20 workshops, seminars, and demonstrations for a variety of clients including, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA), and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). Prior to working as an evaluation and research consultant, Dr. Engelman taught an array of undergraduate courses at the University of Delaware, such as Research Methods, Statistics, and Social Psychology.
